More to argue about: Fantasy Rankings

ESPN just released the top 200 fantasy players for the 2010 season, let's look at what guys from each team found their place on the list:

7. Chase Utley

11. Roy Halladay
13. David Wright
14. Ryan Howard

24. Jose Reyes

34. Jimmy Rollins
36. Jayson Werth
40. Jayson Bay

58. Johan Santana
68. Shane Victorino

79. Francisco Rodriguez
87. Cole Hamels

104. Raul Ibanez
109. Carlos Beltran

170. J.A. Happ

You know why I like fantasy ranking lists like this? Because it gives you a good idea of the talent levels for different teams.  Obviously it skews the rankings on a player-to-player basis, but team wise you can see talent disparities very easily.  The Phillies have 9 guys, the Mets have 6.  Still a very respectable number for the Mets, but it speaks volumes about the set-up of their current team.  They employ 6 of the top 110 players, but don't have another in the top 200 after that.  Fantasy rankings are obviously different than value or player rankings, but they value a lot of the same things -- production wise.

These rankings show a trend back upwards for most Mets and that's more than fair considering how young their stars are.  I was very surprised to see Raul and Beltran as low as they are.  This guy must be anti-old guys in his fantasy world -- well, I am too, so I can't blame him.

I assume most of you guys play fantasy baseball, what say all of you?

surprised to see Santana ranked 58th. I wonder how many pitchers are ranked ahead of him.

no way Johan stays on the board that long. He will prob. go in the first round in my league. I don't see him any lower than the upper 2nd round. If he falls to the 3rd round, I would be an idiot not to take him.

Carlos is also low, but given his injury, I think it is fair. Plus I would stay away from ibanez unless he falls into your lap in the later rounds. He's an injury waiting to happen.

The low rankings of Johan, Wright, and Reyes are only because of the questions surrounding their injuries and for Wright his power. I wouldn't be surprised if Wright and Reyes are both around Utley at the end of the year. Just last year Wright and Reyes were being drafted safely in top 10, if not top 5. With Reyes it's more of how he comes back after injury but so far reports are good and I think Wright will get his power back. He'll hopefully get the protection he needs with Bay and with a full year of Citi under his belt he may have a better feel for the park. I also wouldn't be surprised if Johan ends up right around Halladay.

Indeed Will. Reyes was projected to go #1 last year in many rankings and many leagues drafted him #1. I had the first pick last year, and as much as I wanted to, I just couldn't see myself taking a SS #1, even if it was one of my favorite players. So I skipped him and took Pujols. I wouldn't have gotten 3rd place without him (missed 2nd only by a couple of points).
