In case you missed it, Omar Minaya has got the quote machine rolling and he says, get this, the Mets will not be sellers come the deadline.  His logic is that there's only "a couple" teams ahead of them in the wild card, so let's improve the team, we're not out of it.  WHAT?  Roby Neyer had this to say about it:
Realistically? Stop it. Just ... stop. Optimism is one thing, and often it's a good thing. But the notion that these terribly hobbled Mets are, right now, just a couple of wins or a spare outfielder away from being in a position to leapfrog six or seven teams and grab a brass ring ... well, I'm afraid that it borders on delusional. As messed up as this organization is right now, someone in charge really needs to step in and tell Minaya to start thinking about 2010 and beyond...
Now that's what I like to hear.  Sense.  How can Omar parade around pretending that he's sitting on a contender who's suffered some bad luck right now?  I don't want to debate how good they can be with a full roster, the point is, they don't have one.  This is the perfect opportunity to look like a genius in 2010 and Omar is blowing.  As someone who thinks that being an MLB GM is the ultimate dream job it is painful to watch Minaya kid himself time after time. With the roster he currently has, if he sells all expendable pieces and re-tools for 2010 there's no telling how good the Mets can be next season.  Instead, Omar is dragging his feet, pretending that when the guys get back they're going to rip off twenty straight and surge into the playoffs.  Grow up.  If/when those guys come back they're going to be guys who've been out for months and most likely be quite rusty.  I don't even mind if Omar brings in some big name guys like Halladay this week, so long as he explains that it will be good for the long-term health of the ballclub.  That it'll extend their window a few years.  Instead he'll make a splash and say, "We're so happy to have _______.  He's going to be an integral part of our push down the stretch."  Spare me. You know what's really going to piss me off?  When the Mets come back strong next season and all of Mets Nation is cheering and taunting that "Ha! We told you we were good, we didn't need to sell" and it's going to be a damn shame.  Because instead of maximizing his assets and re-tooling for next season, Omar is content to keep sitting on his current egg and pray that it hatches.  In the end, they'll be the same flawed team they've been this year and the past two and it'll be because Omar failed, as always, to see the big picture.
