Mets about to Add Insult to Injury with Molina

If you haven't already heard that Carlos Beltran is having arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out 12 weeks, I'm sorry to have ruined (made) your day Mets (Philllies) fans.  However I'm not going to write (mock) about that situation -- I'll leave that to Matt sometime today.  Not only is Beltran sidelined, but reportedly the Mets are close to signing the 35-year-old Bengie Molina to a two-year deal.

And this is where Phillies fans celebrate again.  Omar apparently is failing to hold the one-year line on Molina who himself was holding out for three.  I guess that's a compromise, but the Mets are certainly the ones suffering. Craig Calcaterra put a good spin on the news over at Circling the Bases today: After telling us about the Carlos Beltran surgery thing, Bob asked what else could go wrong for the Mets. I suppose some will differ, but giving two years to a catcher with a .285 on base percentage seems wrong to me. Morosi says they're close to doing that with Bengie Molina. I've never quite understood why the Mets want him, but then again there are a lot of things I don't understand about the Mets. And that about sums it up!

This season is shaping up to be more and more critical as the season nears.  With Beltran's injury, the additions of both over-30 guys, Bay and Molina, and a dearth of major-league ready talent on the farm, it could be a rocky few years as more of Wright and Reyes' primes is wasted with lackluster team performance.

Don't see the fascination with Benjie, would have rather signed Torrealba, but it is a one year signing with Thole projecting as the starter in 11, and it is still an upgrade over Schneider, who can't hit OR play defense.
The Beltran surgery is another indictment on the clueless Met front office. How does Omar keep his job? How did they NOT know about this? Beltran (you can tell he is a Scott Boras client) decides on his own to have surgery without consulting the team? I would think that to be a violation of his contract, and how bout the Met medical staff's involvement, or lack of in this whole matter? Surgery should have happened last August, not a month before SP. Even if you give them the benefit of the doubt by taking the cautious approach wouldn't you think they would be demanding medical updates from someone making over a $100 million?
I hope I am wrong, but I felt last year after reading about Beltran's condition that the only way for him to really get FIXED was to undergo micro fracture surgery. (that is not what he just had done, so there is a chance that even when he comes back it won't cure what ails him.)
Angel Pagan or FMart in center till May at the very least.....oh the joys of being a mets fan........

I find it amusing that:

1) You are comparing Molina to Bay. Bay is in his early 30's and late prime. Molina is a 37 Year old catcher.
2) That you are so appalled at a 2 year signing of Molina, but not the two year signing of the backup Schneider

Phillies signed a much older left fielder last year and he didn't have nearly the track record of Jason Bay. Somehow that was a good signing, and Bay isn't?

must be something in the pretzels down there....

@buc The Phils added Ibanez to an all-ready successful team. The Mets are trying to shore up a crumbling organization. Big difference in the weight and significance of the signing.

Benny, the difference is.. the phillies dont need a catcher, the mets do. That might draw a distinction between molina and schneider. one will be your backstop for 2010 and the other might be lucky if he sees 100 at bats playing behind Ruiz.
