Ok, this is getting out of hand, but it is getting to the point where it is expected: [caption id="" align="alignright" width="360" caption="WTF Is Going On?"]WTF Is Going On?[/caption] Wow, what a day!  But in the end, the Mets were able to pull out a win last night over the Cards 6-4. I didn't see the entire game because I decided instead to see the American premier of Donnie Yen's new film about Ip Man; Wing Chun master and Bruce Lee's master. I highly recommend it for all martial arts movie enthusiasts.  However, I feel this quote from Alex Cora must be the mindset for this team going forward:
“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series.  Tonight was a total team effort.  Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play.  That’s what it’s going to take, you know.  Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run.  You know, it’s a total team effort.  If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.”
I like that Cora has asserted himself as a leader on this team.  He is a veteran, has played on winning teams and is well respected.  And when you have Fernando Tatis batting cleanup, the only way you are going to win is like they did last night. Do all the little things perfectly right; which admittedly, the Mets have not been the best at.  Castillo almost was thrown out at the plate last night because he looked back after rounding third.  JUST F'N RUN LUIS!  You got the go sign, there is no need to look back.  While it was just an insurance run, it was an important run and the game could have gone differently had they not scored.  But K-Rod came in and shut the door in the ninth rendering it a moot point. It's not all doom and gloom though.  There is some good news on the horizon:
  • John Maine had a good rehab outing going 4 innings while giving up just one run.  He could be back next week.
  • Billy Wagner could be back in as early as 4 weeks!  This would be great for the mets who really only have one Lefty in their bullpen.  And at the rate he is being used, his arm WILL fall off.
  • Every day that goes by is another day closer to the return of Delgado.
So with last nights win, and Philly being swept consecutive home series and doing their best injury impression of the Mets, we move 1.5 games out of first place.  It really is amazing.  Feeling the heat Pricktorino?:
"We'll be fine. We're defending champs, and we're not defending champs for no reason. At the end of the day, I'm walking out of this place, and we're still in first place. That's how you've got to look at it."
It's not wise to rest on your previous accomplishments Vicky.  If you do, you may not be in first place for very long.  Here come the newly dubbed UNDERDOG METS.

Hot Foot blog who the hell do you think you are?  You’re messing up the natural order of things.  Mets fans are not supposed to have love for the Phillies!  That’s like a cat licking a dog’s ass! (Wait, what?)  What’s going on here?:

Just give me a second to explain myself before you start throwing stuff at your computer screen.  Besides, that’ll just cause a mess and it’ll void your computer’s warranty.

Yes, the Phillies.  Why?  Well, it’s simple.  The only reason the Mets are still in the NL East hunt to begin with is because the Phillies did not win a game last week.

Oh you smug bastard.  Touche Dave Rosado, Touche.

The Mets faithful should be very pleased.  If the Phillies actually played baseball last week instead of trading “yo momma“ jokes in the dugout every game, they’d be expanding the division lead instead of shrinking it by the day.

The Mets and Phillies have combined for some ugly baseball this season.  Hopefully as the summer heats up, so will the division and we can watch a great NL East race and some more excitement in ‘09, like in years past.  Believe it or not Muts Phans, I want the Mets to be good.  I want them to compete for the division title and give the Phillies a run for their money every season.  Except, obviously I’ll be rooting for the collapse or just falling short to the Phillies, but that’s to be expected.

Jayson Stark is reporting that Clay Condrey is on a way-one trip to the DL, starting tomorrow.  The bullpen is getting spaghetti thin these days.  With Madson struggling, it is looking anorexic. Sergio Escalona will be recalled as his replacement. [ESPN]

This is getting ridiculous.  If he wants out of the lineup, Jose Reyes should just fake an injury.  He doesn’t have to go out and get into car accidents and actually injure himself, for christ’s sake.

Don’t worry no on was hurt in the accident or I wouldn’t be making jokes about it.  That’s just bad karma.  I don’t want that following me around, ya know?

Reyes was on route with the team trainer to a check-up when they were rear-ended by a firetruck.

Jose please, next time you want to make sure you stay on the DL, go home to the D.R. for vacation and claim mental illness or something.  Stop baiting firetrucks into rear-ending you.

Jose Reyes has been out so long, I think it’s time we focused our hate on a more able-bodied member of the Mets.  So over-taking the crown for the time being is none other than the original Most Hated Met, Francisco Rodriguez.  This will be up for re-evaluation when Jose Reyes returns.

Needless to say, Francisco did a little dance after hearing of his achievement.
